Storage Tips

Making the most of your self storage space can be tricky, but well worth the effort. That's why we have provided some handy tips to help you as you pack up and store your things. At American Self Storage, we'll do our best to make sure your storage experience is a good one.

  • Use good quality storage boxes (available for sale at American Self Storage).
  • Fill boxes to capacity; partially full or bulging boxes may tip or collapse.
  • Heavy items should be packed into small boxes so that they are easy to lift.
  • Label or number boxes for easy reference when you need to locate your goods.
  • Make up an inventory of your stored items and keep it in a safe place at home.
  • Photos are always a good idea. Protect your fragile goods in bubble wrap or wrapping paper; mark the box or bin 'Fragile' and avoid stacking heavier boxes on top.
  • Dishes and glasses should be wrapped in paper or bubble wrap before storing.
  • Garden equipment, pool supplies/toys, and sporting equipment should be cleaned before storing.
  • Wrap table legs with bubble wrap before storing.
  • Wardrobe boxes (available for sale at American Self Storage) allow you to store your clothing on hangers, which keeps their shape.
  • Save space and store your shoes at the bottom of each wardrobe box.
  • Place heavy or bulky items in the unit first to provide a good stacking base.
  • Plan your storage space- put those items that you need to get to most often near the front, close to the door.
  • To maximize space, stack similar-sized boxes together and make full use of the unit’s height.
  • Do not place heavy items or items with sharp edges on sofas or mattresses.
  • Always place a protective cover (available for sale at American Self Storage) over your soft furnishings.
  • Stack chairs seat to seat with cloth or paper to separate them.
  • Leave refrigerator or freezer doors open for ventilation.
  • Make sure your freezer is defrosted.
  • Pictures and mirrors should be wrapped in mirror boxes, marked fragile and stacked on their end.
  • Avoid stacking or leaning furniture against outside walls to aid ventilation.
  • Cover your goods with dust sheets (available for sale at American Self Storage) to protect against dust.
  • Leave some space in your unit to retrieve items when needed.
  • Avoid over-packing your unit to prevent items leaning up against the door when closed; you may not be able to re enter.
  • Use quality packing tape and plenty of it. Keep a spare roll in your unit for re-packing boxes as you retrieve items periodically.
  • Keep a flashlight in your unit to find your things more easily.
  • Use shelving to maximize space; lay down a blanket or sheet on dressers or tables when stacking items.
  • Make use of suitcases and duffle bags when packing. As long as you won’t be using them, you may as well fill them to conserve space.
